Daylight Savings Time Petitions

Daylight Saving Time is a practice that has been with us for some time. Countries that have the four seasons such as America use this practice. First, let us understand what Daylight Saving Time actually is. It is a practice of adjusting clocks at certain times in different countries. It is mainly done during summer time so as to make evening day light last longer than usual. In this way, ordinary times or patterns of sunrise are sacrificed. Normally, clocks are adjusted by one hour before spring. They are then re-adjusted to usual times during autumn.

Why should this adjustment of clocks be done? Are there benefits and demerits of the same? It is not easy to have uniform answers to the above questions since many people do not agree. In America for instance people are torn along different lines on the same. This is because there are proponents of Daylight Saving Time as well as some antagonists. Pundits posit that in most cases all these people have some verifiable facts to back up their assertions. To back up the controversy, there are already petitions challenging the practice. Petitioners have brought forward their research findings to support their claim.

Before delving into the petitions, it is good to note that countries that use this practice are mainly those at the tropics. Among continents that do not use Daylight Saving Time is Africa. Those who support the use of Daylight Saving Time posit that it increases timelines hence enabling people to undertake leisure activities in the evening. This they say is good for human health especially the psychological part of it. The claims further have it that crime rates are reduced with energy being saved. All the above have however been challenged by those who oppose it.

Those against Daylight Saving Time claim that it actually wastes energy. They have cited the increased consumption of fuel by motor vehicles as an example of the energy wastage. Pundits suggest that energy wastage supersedes the saving. When it comes to effects on the economy, they suggest that they are negative due to more costs incurred on the economy during that extra hour.

There are very mixed reactions on effects of Daylight Saving Time on health in the world. First of all, there are the obvious benefits of having an extra hour for engaging in leisure activities which are good for your health. Petitioners against the practice however claim that there are negative effects on health. Heart attack among people is one of the side effects that they cite. Disruption of sleeping time has also been noted as having small but significant negative effects on the health of a person. It remains to be seen whether one side will convince the other in determining the fate of Daylight Saving Time.
